Fraud*
According to the Collins English Dictionary 10th Edition fraud can be defined as: "deceit, trickery, sharp practice, or breach of confidence, perpetrated for profit or to gain some unfair or dishonest advantage".[1] In the broadest sense, a fraud is an intentional deception made for personal gain or to damage another individual; the related adjective is fraudulent. The specific legal definition varies by legal jurisdiction. Fraud is a crime, and also a civil law violation. Defrauding people or entities of money or valuables is a common purpose of fraud, but there have also been fraudulent "discoveries", e.g. in science, to gain prestige rather than immediate monetary gain

Goldman Sachs News and Links - October 11 &12, 2009

The last two days had many interesting articles and posts.  There seems to be no shortage of information exposing the actions and activities of Goldman Sachs and many of the other participants who are busy enriching themselves at the expense of our entire nation.

Goldman and the other major financial players seem to be flourishing when the rest of the nation is floundering.  Even John McCain said on CNN yesterday, that we (the government) has been bailing out those "too big to fail" companies while we (the government) have told the "too small to help" small business on Central Avenue that they did not warrant our (the government) help.

Wall Street vs. Main Street:  Small business is what built this nation and our economy.  In aggregage, small business accounts for the majority of jobs in the U.S., the majority of innovation and the majority of funds deposited into those "too big to fail" institutions.  Those are well known facts.

Small business should get the help not "too big to fail" business.  Small business should be able to borrow money at the "prime" rate not the other way around.  How strong the influence of Goldman Sachs must be to seemingly control our economic policies.  If those at Goldman Sachs - including our past Treasury Secretary - were truly patriots then perhaps things would be different.  Unfortunately, Goldman, its past and current leadership are not.

That's my rant for today.  Enjoy the news below.

Goldman Sachs on Geithner's Speed Dial

WSJ on who shows up on Tim Geithner's speed dial:

The Wall Street name that pops up most frequently on Mr. Geithner's calendar is that of Goldman's Mr. Blankfein, whose bank repaid $10 billion in bailout funds this summer. (J.P. Morgan has also repaid its bailout funds.) Mr. Blankfein's name appears 22 times on the calendar, including two in-person meetings and, on May 1, three phone calls. That was around the time the government was preparing to announce results of its so-called stress tests of banks' financial strength. The two men know each other from Mr. Geithner's days as president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. A spokesman for Goldman Sachs didn't return a call for comment. A spokesman for J.P. Morgan declined to comment.

I have some of my own ideas to add to this.

Goldman Does Gold

Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan are leaping head-first into gold futures, do you wonder why? It should be fairly clear. If you need an explanation, feel free to get in touch. I invite any of the Evil Twin rats to comment... anonymously, of course. Come on, we see what you're doing, why don't you chime in? I normally don't republish this much here on GS666 but this is extra important and you'd do well to pay attention. It's too obvious not to. - JDA

What Do You Mean "Gold Shortage?"

WC Varones teaches us a lesson in gold:

In related news, the U.S. Mint suspends production of proof and uncirculated gold and silver coins. They claim that they can't get the blanks fast enough to mint enough coins, which is complete bullscheisse. You may recall last year's shortage of physical gold. That would obviously have been a sign that the Mint needed to ramp up production. But no, a year later, they still can't meet demand, claiming that they can't get enough "blanks," the coin-shaped pieces of gold on which the Mint impresses the images and writing.

Let me let you in on a little secret. If the government wanted you to have gold, it would not be a problem to find a company that was able to form gold into little blank coin-shaped pieces. A hobbyist machinist could set up a pretty good operation in his garage to do this.

JDA hereby tips her hat just for use of bullscheisse alone. Oh, and he's right. I'd tell you to hit the bunker but chances are if you aren't hunkered down by now, it's too late to start your disaster planning. Sorry about that.

JDA also recommends Antal Fekete's Gold is pale because so many thieves plot against it (via GATA):

Let me spell out for my readers what the vanishing of the gold basis means from the point of view of the puppet-masters of the gold futures markets.

It means that they are fighting a losing battle. They are desperately trying to coax gold out of hiding by offering ever higher bribes -- not in terms of the price but in terms of the basis. A low basis means that they offer to take your cash gold and let you have gold futures in exchange at a discount price. (The discount is contango minus the basis, so that the two are inversely related: As the basis falls, the discount increases.) This will allow you to invest an amount equal to the price of gold (less 5 percent, the margin on the gold future) in any way you want and, having paid the reduced contango, you can keep the profits. The point is that you will still benefit from any advance in the gold price, just as you would if you owned cash gold. You can have your cake and eat it too.
read the rest via Jr Deputy Accountant here [JDA hereby disclaims she's no gold bug but come on, you can't help but connect these f&^*ing dots]

Like WC Varones declared... "so how about that gold?"

Goldman Sachs gets gift from government

From Business Insider:

Goldman Sachs Congressional Earmark: Bank Subsidiary Gets $3 Million

With all the company's riches, why is a Goldman Sachs (GS) subsidiary getting a $3 million earmark from Washington?

Politico: A mining company owned by Goldman Sachs and two private equity funds is in line to get a $3 million earmark for work at a rare earth elements mine in Mountain Pass, Calif. — raising questions as to why Congress would take on some of the risk for a bailed-out investment giant that’s already making a profit.

Gee, you don't think it was another kickback do you? Hahahaha, criminals are soooooo funny. That's just a tip on the 24 trillion dollar bar tab.

Let's Not Forget about the NY Fed Connection and Goldman Sachs

Editors note: TheCenterLane often covers Wall Street Mafia issues and was also kind enough to do a guest post for me - coincidentally on the NY Fed - so I could run off to Washington to flip off the Treasury. Though this post is months old, it's worth reminding GS666 readers here that this issue is still painfully relevant. - JDA

Somebody really loves Goldman Sachs:

The recent article about Treasury Secretary "Turbo" Tim Geithner by Jo Becker and Gretchen Morgenson, appearing in the April 26 edition of The New York Times, seems to have helped fan the flames of the current outrage concerning the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Turbo Tim was president of the New York Fed during the five years prior to his appointment as Treasury Secretary. Becker and Morgenson pointed out many of the ways in which "conflict of interest" seems to be one of the cornerstones of that institution:

The New York Fed is, by custom and design, clubby and opaque. It is charged with curbing banks' risky impulses, yet its president is selected by and reports to a board dominated by the chief executives of some of those same banks. Traditionally, the New York Fed president's intelligence-gathering role has involved routine consultation with financiers, though Mr. Geithner's recent predecessors generally did not meet with them unless senior aides were also present, according to the bank's former general counsel.

By those standards, Mr. Geithner's reliance on bankers, hedge fund managers and others to assess the market's health -- and provide guidance once it faltered -- stood out.

The New York Fed is probably the most important of the nation's twelve Federal Reserve Banks, since its jurisdiction includes the heart of America's financial industry. As the Times piece pointed out, this resulted in the same type of "revolving door" opportunities as those enjoyed by members of Congress who became lobbyists and vice versa:

A revolving door has long connected Wall Street and the New York Fed. Mr. Geithner's predecessors, E. Gerald Corrigan and William J. McDonough, wound up as investment-bank executives. The current president, William C. Dudley, came from Goldman Sachs.

[Who among you would listen to Dudley knowing where he comes from? Interest rates must stay low and small business is the problem? That seems odd, don't you think beasts like Goldman Sachs are the problem, Bill?]

Calculated Risk:

Atlanta Fed research economist Melinda Pitts writes at Macroblog: Prospects for a small business-fueled employment recovery

In a speech yesterday, William Dudley, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, identified financial constraints for small businesses as a restraint on the pace of economic recovery.

Panzner on Goldman Sachs' "Smart" Money

Editors note: Jr Deputy Accountant recently interviewed Financial Armageddon's Michael Panzner for accounting tabloid Going Concern and the 2 part piece may be found here and here. If you are familiar with his work, you already know that Panzner understands all too well what got us into this mess and in a recent post on Financial Armageddon, he goes after the Goldman rats ("crackerjack Goldman analysts" isn't exactly flattering after all). The markets continue to follow the rats - so what happens when they lead investors right off the cliff?

Goldman Sachs: The "Smart" Money?!

U.S. stocks rebounded today, aided by a rally in financials. Why was the group strong? Because a team of analysts at a well-known Wall Street firm upgraded the large banks sector. And why did they do that? Bloomberg gives us the lowdown in "Wells Fargo, Biggest U.S. Banks Raised by Goldman":

Wells Fargo & Co., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and the biggest U.S. banks were raised to “attractive” from “neutral” by Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which said share prices don’t reflect prospects for earnings growth.

“We believe this difference in earnings power hasn’t been fully reflected in share prices,” New York-based analysts led by Richard Ramsden wrote in a note to clients today. “We estimate that normalized earnings for large banks are 39 percent higher than in 2007 despite the 36 percent decline in share prices.”

Wow, pretty powerful stuff, eh? Then again, maybe not. You see, if you go back and look at what Goldman said in late-January, when most bank stocks were trading at far lower levels than they are now, the firm wasn't exactly upbeat on the group.

The report said Goldman would be owed the payment under a $3 billion rescue finance package it gave to CIT in June 2008, before the U.S. government bought $2.33 billion of CIT preferred shares in December.
